Motorized & Smart Shades: A Homeowner’s Guide

Motorized shades went from luxury to practical in just a few years. Here’s how they work, what they cost and where they make the biggest difference in your home.

Floor-to-ceiling smart drapes in a sunlit living room

A decade ago, motorized shades meant an electrician, a control panel and a serious budget. Today a quiet, rechargeable motor hides inside the shade tube, pairs with a remote or your phone, and lowers your shades on a schedule you set once and forget. This guide covers what you need to know before you add motorization to your order.

What can be motorized

Nearly every product we install is available motorized:

  • Roller shades — the most popular and most affordable to motorize.
  • Sheer shades — motorized tilt and lift for effortless light control.
  • Woven wood and Roman shades — quiet lift motors that keep the soft, tailored look.
  • Smart drapes — a motorized track that opens and closes full-height drapery at the touch of a button.
  • Patio and exterior shades — motorized with optional wind sensors that retract the shade automatically in gusty weather.

Battery vs. hardwired power

For most of the homes we work in across North Dallas and Northwest Arkansas, rechargeable battery motors are the easy answer: no wiring, no visible cords, and the convenience is identical.

Remote, app and voice control

Every motorized shade comes with a handheld remote that can control one shade or a group. Add a small Wi-Fi hub and you unlock app control from anywhere — lower the bedroom shades from the couch, or check that the patio shades are up while you’re on vacation. Through the hub, shades can also join popular smart-home platforms and respond to voice assistants, so “good morning” can raise every shade in the house. We confirm compatibility with your existing setup before anything is ordered.

Schedules and scenes

This is where motorization earns its keep. Set west-facing shades to lower at 2 p.m. in summer and the room stays cool without you thinking about it. Schedule bedroom shades to rise gently with the sunrise. Build a “movie night” scene that drops the blackout shades in the media room, or an “away” mode that moves shades during the day so the house looks occupied. Once a schedule is set, the shades simply do the right thing every day. See how this helps with heat in our guide to the best window treatments for Texas and Arkansas heat.

Where motorization pays off most

  • Tall or hard-to-reach windows — two-story foyers, transoms, windows behind furniture or over tubs.
  • Banks of windows — raise or lower five shades in one motion instead of one at a time.
  • Bedrooms — blackout shades that rise on a schedule are a genuine quality-of-life upgrade.
  • Homes with kids and pets — no cords at all, which is the safest option available.
  • Patios and sunrooms — big exterior shades are heavy; a motor makes them effortless.

What motorization costs

Motorization typically adds roughly $200 – $400 per shade depending on the motor, power type and control system, plus a one-time cost for a hub if you want app or voice control. Many homeowners motorize selectively — the tall, grouped and bedroom windows — and keep cordless manual lifts where they’re convenient. For full pricing context, see our custom shade pricing guide.

Frequently asked questions

Rechargeable battery motors typically run six months to a year on a charge with normal daily use. Recharging takes a couple of hours with a simple plug-in charger, and the motor is hidden inside the shade tube so nothing shows.

Not for battery-powered shades, which is why they are the most popular option in existing homes. Hardwired motors are a great choice in new construction or remodels where an electrician is already on site.

Battery-powered shades keep working through an outage. If you want a manual backup on a hardwired shade, let us know during your quote and we’ll recommend the right motor.

Most modern shade motors connect to a small hub that works with popular smart-home platforms and voice assistants, so you can group shades, set schedules and add them to scenes. We’ll confirm compatibility with your setup before you order.
